René Leys - Victor Segalen

Alors c'est vrai que j'étais sensée passer la seconde en ce qui concerne mon rythme de lecture mais comme d'habitude, c'est au moment où je me pose un cadre que ça deviens limite pire. Heureusement j'ai quand même un peu le temps de lire et je voudrais vraiment vous parler de ce livre là.
Je n'avais jamais entendu parler de ce livre et j'au eu la chance de travailler dans une librairie ancienne pendant une semaine avant de déménager, ce qui m'a donnée l'occasion de beaucoup discuter avec ce fameux libraire passionné par son métier. Pour lui, le livre est synonyme de liberté, conviction que je ne peux qu'approuver. On a beaucoup parlé ensemble et un jour au cour d'une discussion il a sorti une feuille et a commencé à écrire des titres de livres. A la fin de la journée il m'a tendu la feuille "Tiens, lis ça, dans n'importe quel ordre mais commence par celui-là."

I know that I was supposed to get a better rhythm in my reading but as usual, it's when you want to respect the rules that you make it even worse. But fortunately I still have a bit of time to read and I really wanted to talk about this book.
I had never heard of this book before and I was lucky enough to work in a book shop that sell ancient books for a week before I moved, which gave me the opportunity to talk a lot with this brilliant book shop owner that is so passionate about his job. For him, book are freedom and I can only agree with that. So we talked a lot and during one of our discussions he took a piece of paper and started writing titles of books. At the end of the day he gave me the sheet "Take it, read that, the order doesn't matter but start with this one."

"J'adopte malgré moi le style qui conviendrait su jamais j'écrivais ce livre ... Ce livre qui ne sera point, car ne vaut-il pas mieux le vivre ?"

Et "celui-là" c'est René Leys, roman publié au début du 20e siècle, qui nous plonge dans l'univers de la Chine Impérial. Le narrateur en poste à Pékin, cherche à se trouver un professeur de Mandchou qu'il se dégote en la personne de René Leys, un belge installé depuis longtemps en Chine. Il va ensuite découvrir que cet étrange personnage a aussi accès à l'Intérieur du palais impérial, lieu autour duquel règne un profond mystère.

Ce roman est écrit sous la forme d'un journal et je pense qu'on pourrait le raconter de pleins de manières différentes. C'est en tout cas une excellente lecture, un vrai dépaysement et le style est un vrai délice. Le seul micro mini bémol sont les références à la culture impériale chinoise : je pense que j'aurais pu apprécier d'avantage le récit si cette culture m'avait été plus familière. Toutefois, cela ne gêne pas la bonne compréhension du texte. Plus qu'une présentation de l'empire, c'est aussi un roman pleins de mystère à commencer par celui qui plane autour de ce personnage central et qui donne un vrai rythme au récit.

Je voulais vraiment en dire deux mots parce que comme je l'ai déjà dit je n'en avais jamais entendu parler et je ne pense pas que ce soit un classique très connu mais il mérite vraiment qu'on s'y attarde.

Je me rend compte que c'est assez difficile à vendre alors une fois de plus, mais si vous aimez les romans historiques, la culture chinoise et les mystères, faites moi confiance, vous passerez un bon moment.

And "this one" was René Leys, a novel published at the beginning of the 20th century that makes us dive into the Imperial China's universe. The narrator who is currently working in Beijing, is looking for a teacher because he want to improve his Manchu. He manages to find one : René Leys, a belgian man who has been living in China for a while at that time. He is going to discover then that this weird character can also access the Inside of the Imperial palace, around which there're a lot of mysteries.
This novel has been written as a journal and I think that we could tell this story in a lot of different ways. Anyway, this was an awesome book to read, a true change of scene and the writing style is delightful. The only tiny "problem" is that there are a lot of references to the Chinese culture of the time  and I think that I could have understood some things that happened better if I had that knowledge but it's not really disturbing for the reading and you can understand the story even if some little aspect are left on the side. Even more than just a representation of the Empire, this book is full of mysteries starting with the one floating around the main character and his link to the imperial family which really gives rhythm to the all novel.
I really wanted to talk about this book because as I said before I never heard about it before I read it and I don't think that it is a very well-known classic and I think it deserves more attention. I realize that it is not very easy to sell but if you like history or mysterious stories trust me, you'll have a good time.
