Charly 9 - Jean Teulè

Avant de l'ouvrir je ne savais pas vraiment ce qui m'attendait dans ce livre à part que ça retraçait l'histoire de Charles IX, jeune roi de France à l'origine de la Saint Barthélémy. Et puis honnêtement, l'histoire de France ça me cassait sérieusement les noix à l'école. Pour être tout à fait honnête, j'ai du en apprendre une partie pour très vite l'oublier. Alors si tu lis ça et que tu vas encore à l'école, ne suis pas mon exemple, parce que le savoir, c'est trop la liberté ! (OUAIS ! Viens on fait une ronde avec les drapeaux de tous les pays du monde sur nos tee-shirt et on chante we are the world !).
Plus sérieusement je n'avais donc aucune vraies connaissances ou du moins aucun souvenir de ce roi de France que j'ai découvert à travers ce livre.

Before to open this book, I had literally now idea what to expect from it but that it dealt with Charles IX, young King of France who was at the origin of the St Barthélémy massacre. And honestly the History of France wasn't really interesting me at school. To be completely honest I think I learnt half of it and forgot it instantly. So if you read that and you're still going to school, don't follow my example, because knowledge is freedom ! (YEAH ! Let's take each other's hand and have flags of all the country of the world on our t-shirts and sing we are the world !).
More seriously I didn't know anything about this king that I discovered in this book.

Je pense que ce n'est pas vraiment un livre qui s'adresse à de gros férus d'histoire, je pense que c'est un bon moyen pour les néophytes dans mon genre pour se remettre dans le bain. Et puis si t'aime pas trop lire et que la Saint Barthélémy est à ton programme d'histoire, lis-ça, ça va te faire marrer (un peu de cul, un peu de sang, un bon cocktail pour les 13-17 ans).

Aussi si tu aimes les longues descriptions et les trucs hyper romancés, passe ton chemin, tu vas avoir l'imression de lire une liste de course. En effet, ce livre est construit sur une suite d'anecdotes se déroulant entre la décision du massacre (largement poussée pas Catherine de Médicis, la mère casse couilles), et la mort du roi un an et demi plus tard. C'est l'histoire tragique et touchante d'un personnage qui s'est au final vu ronger par le mal qu'il a causé sans vraiment le vouloir en sombrant dans la démence.

I don't think that this book will please you if you're passionate about history but I think that it is a good mean to get neophytes like me interested. Plus, if you don't really like to read and that the St Barthélémy massacre comes up in your history lesson, read this, your'e going to have a good laugh (a bit of sex, a bit of blood, a good mix for people aged 13 to 17).

Also, if you like long descriptions and over novelized stuff, don't read this, you will feel like you're reading a phone book. This book is indeed structured as a list of anecdotes that happened between the acceptation of the massacre (completely pushed by Catherine de Medicis, the annoying king's mom), and the king's death a year and a half later. It's the touching and tragic story of a character that got destroyed by the evil he spread without really wanting it sinking into dementia.

Au final, ça reste mon gros BOF de la fin 2013. Pour moi, il manque un truc à ce bouquin, peut-être une forme de lien entre les événements, et une description plus approfondie des liens entre les personnages. Je pense que c'est un truc que j'aurais aimé voir un peu plus. Je pense que j'ai aussi été déçu parce que je l'aime bien Jean Teulé, je trouve qu'il parle toujours des personnages qu'il met en scène avec beaucoup de tendresse, même des personnages comme Fleur de Tonnerre, première serial killer de l'histoire. J'ai d'ailleurs vu une interview où il en parlait et je peux dire avec certitude que je n'en ai pas fini avec lui.

In the end, it's an OK book but not amazing that I read at the end of 2013. According to me, this book lacks something, maybe a sort of link between the different events and a better descriptions of the relations between the characters. I think that I would have liked it a bit more this way. I also think that it disappointed me a but because I really like Jean Teulé, I think that he speaks about the characters of his book with a lot of tenderness, even if this character happens to be Fleur de Tonnerre, the first serial killer of History. I also watched an interview of him where he spoke about her and I can certify that I'm not done with him or his books.
